The Essence
About Me
Dr. Surabhi Uppal has always been driven by a passion for science and health equity, which inspired her to pursue a career in medicine. She earned her medical degree from Kasturba Medical College in Mangalore, India (2009-2015), where she had the privilege of working with diverse populations, enhancing her understanding of various medical conditions. Dr. Uppal values these experiences, as they have shaped her into the physician she is today.
Following medical school, Dr. Uppal completed her Internal Medicine residency at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, Creighton University, in Phoenix, Arizona (2017-2020). During this time, she cared for adults from a range of socio-economic backgrounds, managing a wide array of medical concerns, including chronic conditions across inpatient, outpatient, and critical care settings. This experience ignited her interest in Infectious Diseases, where she was captivated by the challenge of diagnosing and treating both common and rare diseases.
Dr. Uppal then moved to Washington, DC, for her Infectious Disease fellowship at George Washington University (2020-2022). This training was particularly significant during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, which impacted healthcare globally. She is dedicated to treating a broad spectrum of infectious diseases, offering long-term care to individuals living with HIV, establishing a comprehensive travel medicine clinic, and advocating for responsible antibiotic use.
At heart, Dr. Uppal is an internist who values the importance of empathy and strives to build lasting relationships with her patients. She is eager to support her community’s primary care needs by providing age-appropriate screenings, health maintenance, guideline-directed therapies, and facilitating access to specialists.
